Sciatica is the word used to describe leg pain. We think it should really be called “Sciaticaargh”. Like back pain, sciatica is a broad term. It can be shooting pain like a lightening bolt or a constant dull ache down the leg or buttocks.

How we help sciatica

  • Take pressure off sciatic nerve
  • Manual therapy to improve spinal mobility
  • Targeted treatment for bulging/herniated discs
  • Settle the pain and restore function

A little bit about sciatica

Sciatica is commonly associated with disc problems, where a bulging or herniated disc puts pressure on a spinal nerve, or causes chemical irritation to a nerve leading to pain.

There are other causes of sciatica, particularly as we get older – spinal stenosis, disc degeneration or a combination of things such as contraction of the piriformis muscle.

The origin of most of the sciatica we see is from the spinal segments at the base of the spine where nerves leave the spinal column and travel down our buttocks, groin and legs.  The levels most affected are the L5S1 and L4L5 spinal segments at the very bottom of our back.

Helping to alleviate sciatica

At Spinex, we aim to relieve sciatica primarily by taking pressure off spinal discs and gently restoring movement in spinal segments where a nerve may be impinged or inflamed.  In most cases sciatica can be addressed with a combination of manual therapy, simple strengthening and function restoration.

If the condition is severe or has not responded to manual therapy, we will most likely use IDD Therapy to ease the leg pain.   The goal is to treat the disc which may be pressing on the nerve and get mobility into the spinal segment by addressing stiffness in the soft tissues around the spinal segment.
